Gustave Dore
Born on January 6, 1832 in Strasbourg, France, Gustave Dore was a prolific artist, sculpture, engraver, and illustrator. Distinct from his peers for many reasons, Dore was completely self-taught and untrained, yet lived an affluent lifestyle and reaped the rewards of commercial success. Dore produced over 1000,000 sketches in his lifetime and his art is considered some of the most profound in the world. Rarely using any color, many believed him to be color blind, though it was never confirmed. Along with the actual lack of color in his works, the subject matter of his artwork was often negative and dark, which often made it difficult to display.
